DEMOPOLIS &8212; WINN 98 is expanding their play-by-play coverage of regional football this coming season, but the station isn&8217;t adding more stations.
Instead the station has partnered with Collins Communications to broadcast live coverage of five schools, in addition to the already established coverage of the Sweet Water Bulldogs on the radio, over the Internet. The coverage, along with the addition of a coaches&8217; show on Tuesday night, is a way for the station to give exposure to region schools that might not otherwise have an option for fans not attending games to receive the play by play as it occurs.
The new online live broadcasts will feature Marengo Academy, Southern Academy, Wilcox Academy, Leroy High School and Washington High School games, both at home and on the road. Parker said the coverage of the schools will also be provided by local school supporters to keep the community feel the broadcasts were created to evoke.
Parker said the company found a way to make the idea work and partnered with the station to provide the technical expertise for the project. He said after it was worked out the station contacted the five schools to ask if they were interested in the venture.
Parker said Collins Communication is currently in the process of running hard lines to all of the stadiums to provide broadband access, which is crucial to quality live Web broadcasts, and working out the minor kinks. He said depending on the popularity and how each community embraces the new option, the coverage could expand to other sports after football is completed.
