Big hopes for area all-stars

DEMOPOLIS &8212; After finishing up the league tournament, a number of Demopolis Babe Ruth players have been tapped to represent the local league on the 13-, 14- and 15-year-old all-star teams.
Heading into the district tournament next week, league organizer Rob Pearson said the groups have a good chance of going deep into the Babe Ruth all-star schedule, something that wouldn&8217;t be unexpected considering the post season play of the 13-year-old group last year.
Pearson noted that the group that went so far last year, now making up the 14-year-old team, isn&8217;t exactly the same group as last year, though many of the members are back. He also said that the group has to make it through the district tournament before they can make a run in the state tournament.
This year&8217;s 13-year-old group will get to bypass the district tournament, because of a lack of players to field teams in areas that make up the group&8217;s district. The 14- and 15-year-olds aren&8217;t as lucky, however, and will have to face area teams, which consist of players the group normally doesn&8217;t face.
Pearson said this year, though, Greensboro fielded its own Babe Ruth league separate from that of Demopolis. Because of that, he said players from Greensboro weren&8217;t eligible to play on the Demopolis all-star groups.
Greensboro players decided to join with groups in Butler and Livingston to form their all-star group, which will give Demopolis a different look than normal as it heads into district play.
The 14- and 15-year-olds will begin their district play at 6 p.m. July 5 at the Demopolis SportsPlex. The groups will play a best out of five series to determine who moves on to the state tournament, playing July 5-9 until a group wins three in the series.
