Early pitching by Mathew Martin last week against Linden Stockyard in Babe Ruth play, helped his team, Greene County Steam Plant, get up and hold the lead on the way to their, 8-1, win.
Martin, who during the school year plays for the Marengo Academy Longhorns junior varsity baseball team, pitched a two hitter for four out of eight innings of the match up. On his way, he also recorded five strikeouts.
Martin provided fuel on the offensive side for the Greene County Steam Plant team to help the group capitalize on the defensive hold early on n the game. A single from Martin in the first inning loaded the bases after the group had already recorded one run. After a single by the next batter, which lead to an out at home followed by a run, Martin was hit in off a ground out.
Martin scored again in the bottom of the third inning after being walked. After stealing second, Martin was again batted in by a fellow teammate.
In the bottom of the fourth Martin saw his last at bat of the game and capped off his game with an RBI. After two players were walked prior to his at bat, Martin hit a double, which knocked in teammate Chase Cameron and wrapped up the scoring for the game, 8-1.
Though Martin pitches for the team, he also plays first base and center field when not on the mound.
