Southern junior high state champs

GREENSBORO &045; The Southern Academy Junior High boys captured the AISA 2A state championship. They beat Meadowview Christian Junior High in the championship game, 43-27.
Southern had the get by Lowndes Academy Junior High in the semi-finals before they faced Meadowview.
The Cougars played Lowndes in the second round of the playoffs by virtue of Lowndes victory over Escambia. Playing against a much bigger team, the Cougars used the three-ball to take a 13-8 lead and never looked back,
After leading 17-13 at half time, Southern turned up its full court pressure to outscore Lowndes 26-5 in the second half to get the win, 43-18.
Southern was led by William Washburn’s 18 points. Bradley Bonds added 12 and John Michael Cochran chipped in nine.
In the championship match up, the Cougars again found them selves facing a much larger team in Meadowview Christian. Using a half-court trap and their size, the Trojans jumped out to an 11-2 first quarter lead. That didn’t faze the young Cougars, as they fought back in the second quarter to get within five, 19-14 by half time.
Southern turned up its defensive intensity in the third quarter and out scored Meadowview, 16-3 to go up 30-22.
The Trojans tried to rally in the fourth quarter was no match for the tough Cougars. The Southern pressure and the rebounding enabled the Cougars to score 13 points in the final eight minutes of the game. And hold Meadowview to just five points
Washburn topped the Cougars with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Andrew Rose pulled down 14 rebounds to go with his nine points. Cochran also scored nine points.
