GREENSBORO &045; A jury found Mark Anthony Roberts guilty of rape II after six minutes of deliberation Monday.
Roberts, who was 30 at the time of the incident, was arrested in September of 2004 and charged with the rape of a minor who was 14. He forced himself on the victim on six different occasions before his actions were discovered by the victim’s grandmother and reported to the Moundville Police Department.
Jackson said the great-grandmother testified she threatened to call the girl’s mother and Roberts fled out the window. The victim’s mother filed the initial report of the incident after being told what happened.
The minor also testified against Roberts at the trail. She said he first forced himself upon her prior to school starting that year and several times after she came to her aunt’s house after school.
The victim said she tried resisting Roberts but he overpowered her. She said she was afraid to tell anyone about the rapes and became afraid of going to her aunt’s house after school.
Jackson said Roberts has three prior felony convictions, two for robbery, so he is facing 20 years to life imprisonment when he is sentenced a few months from now. Jackson said he would remind the judge of the history of the defendant and ask that he be sent off for a long time.
Jackson said the defendant’s attorney asked for a pre-sentencing report. He said Roberts will also have to register as a sex offender if he is every released from prison.
