Freda Calhoun Averette
MARION &045; Freda Calhoun Averette, 83, of Marion died on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006 at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006 at Waycross Bible Methodist Church. The Revs. Rom McCormick and Arthur Marchant will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. tonight, Nov. 29, 2006 at Kirk Funeral Home Greensboro Chapel. Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro are in charge of the arrangements.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William &8220;Bill&8221; Averette; her mother, Verlie Ryan Calhoun; her father, Gayle Calhoun; two brothers, Luther Calhoun and Jones E. Calhoun.
Ms. Averette is survived by three daughters, Billie Montz and husband, Charles, Patricia Clements and husband, Spencer and Linda Clements and husband, Don, all of Marion; one son, Kenneth Averette and wife, Lisa of Moundville; three sisters, Jessie Fuller of Alworth, Ga., Lavonia Martin of Tuscaloosa and Shirley Sluder of Marion; two sisters-in-law, Clara Calhoun Banks of Tuscaloosa and Louise Calhoun of Marion; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Charles &8220;Rusty&8221; Montz, William Darryl Montz, Jimmy Clements, Ronald Clements, Roger Clements, Steven Averette, Ryan Averette and grandson-in-law, Mike Kowzan.
Elizabeth B. Price
TUSCALOOSA &045; Elizabeth B. Price, 88, of Tuscaloosa died on November 21, 2006 at Bryan-Whitfield Hospital in Demopolis.
She was born October 5, 1918 in Selma.
She is survived by two daughters, Nellie
and son-in-law, Jake Cole of Birmingham and Dot and son-in-law, Keith Evans of Demopolis; two sisters, Katherine Price Bowen of Douglasville, Ga. and Nomie Lee Flynn of Sulligent, and one brother, Joel Standley Babb of Tennessee, five grand-children and 11 great-grand-children.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years and nine months, James B. Price; her parents, Joel and Nellie Babb; two sisters, and two grandsons.
Mrs. Price was a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa, before recently living with family in Birmingham and Demopolis.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Randy Cole and Ronnie Cole; grandsons-in-law Rhett Marlow, Skibo Holman, and Freddie Thomas; and nephews, Rex Grace and Ray Grace.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. M.J. Fitz-Gerald, Dr. Eric Lessmann and the caring staff of the MICU at Bryan-Whitfield Hospital.
Visitation was at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home in Tuscaloosa on November 24, 2006. There was a graveside service at Greenhill Memorial Gardens in Reform on Saturday November 25. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. The Rev. Jerry Koster of Tuscaloosa officiated.
Dr. Bessie L. Rivers Grayson
HUNTSVILLE &045; Dr. Bessie L. Rivers Grayson, 81, of Huntsville, formerly of Thomaston, died on November 19, 2006 at St. John Hospital in Detroit.
Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2006 at Glover’s Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Thomaston. The Rev. James Clarke officiated.
Interment followed in Glover’s Cemetery in Thomaston. Family hour was held from 6 until8 p.m. on Friday at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville.
Larkin&Scott Funeral directors of Demopolis were in charge of the arrangements. She was a graduate of Marengo County Training School, received her bachelors of science degree from Alabama State University, masters in education and masters in library science from Clark University in Atlanta, doctor of philosophy from George Peabody College (Vanderbilt University, Nashville).
She served as librarian for Marengo, Hale and Montgomery School System; assistant professor of library science at Alabama State University, Alabama A&M University and assistant professor of library media at Northeast College.
She was a member of several professional organizations and contributor to numerous books .
She was preceded in death by her husband, L.J. Grayson; one son; one sister, Eula Rivers Glover and brother-in-law, Wade A. Glover; two nephews, Donald Dubose and Theodore Glover.
She is survived by two nieces, Janice L. Glover and May Y. Booth of Detroit; one nephew, Jerome L. Glover of Brooklyn, Ny., 12 great-nieces and nephews; one great-great nephew; three great-nieces; a friend, Dr. Charles Smoot; one godson, Mr. William Gary Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; cousins and a host of other friends.
Jimmy Besteda
PENSACOLA, Fla. &045; Jimmy Besteda, 53 of Pensacola, Fla., formerly of Demopolis died
on November 18, 2006 at Baptist Medical Center in Pensacola, Fla. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at the First Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Jefferson, Ala. The Rev. Edmond Charleston officiated.
Interment followed in Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson. Larkin&Scott Funeral directors of Demopolis were in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Alice B. Besteda of Pensacola, Fla.; five sisters, Rebecca Green of Demopolis, Ellen Biscoe of Mobile, Orsolar Allen,
Louise Charleston and Ada Mae (Jessie) Phillips, all of Demopolis; two brothers, Earl Johnson of Huntsville and Coleman Johnson of Pensacola, Fla.; one uncle, Ben Besteda of Demopolis; mother-in-law, Mary Bradley of Pensacola, Fla.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.
