Forget about the boys of summer, we’re talking about the women of summer as they plan to fire up another season of the slow-pitch WISL (Women’s Independent Softball League). Kristina Hull, the president of the WISL in Demopolis is excited about the start of their second season of play at the Demopolis Sportsplex.
“We’ve always had a women’s softball league for years and years in Demopolis, but we disbanded the league in 2001 and donated all the leftover funds to the Demopolis High School Softball team.” She also said, “We started the league back up in 2005, due to the demand of younger women who were looking for a place to play softball.”
The league contains a total of six teams all sponsored by local businesses and churches, Hull said. The teams are Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital (BWWMH), The Red Barn, Head Quarters, New Era, New Generation, and Sears, also known as “The Lady Ballers.”
“All of the teams have a total of 20-25 women on them, due to the fact that the majority of the players are mothers and you never know when they will need to leave.” “The games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. at the Sportsplex, ” she said.
The league really wants to extend a hand to the community of Demopolis and the surrounding areas to come and watch these women get down in the dirt for a sport that they all love and cherish playing, Hull said.
