The Sweet Water Bulldogs, riding the arm and bat of Drew Luker, braved wet conditions to hammer Reeltown 14-4 in five innings at home yesterday.
The Bulldogs built a huge
lead in the first inning after spotting the Rebels a run.
After singling and stealing second, Deon Williams got things started by scoring on a Rebel error to tie the score at one.
Then Luker, who also pitched three innings of one-hit ball for Sweet Water, launched a towering solo homerun to put Sweet Water up for good.
Antonio Landrum added an RBI single to score Dominic Holt, and another Bulldog runner came home on a passed ball to make the score 4-1.
But, the Buldogs were not done. Jeremy Tucker gave Sweet Water one more insurance run with a sacrifice to score Landrum, making the score 5-1.
Luker completely shut the Reeltown offense down for the next two innings, striking out six batters in the process.
Meanwhile, the Sweet Water bats went back to work. After a Williams double in the second, Preston Jones stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single to make the score 6-1. Holt then singled in Jones to make the score 7-1.
But Reeltown was not ready to lie down. The Rebels added two runs in the fourth to pull to within 7-3.
But Sweet Water answered again in their half of the fourth when Williams singled and scored on an errant throw to give the Bulldogs an 8-3 lead.
Again, Reeltown came back with a run in the fifth to make the score 8-4. This would be the Rebels last however, as Sweet Water went on a tear in the bottom of the fifth to put the game on ice.
The Bulldogs exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth – most of which came with two outs – to put the 14-4 victory away.
Robert Anderson was the first to reach base for the Bulldogs. Anderson then made his way around the bases and scored on an error to make the score 9-4.
Anthony Landrum then came through with an RBI single to score Tucker to give Sweet Water a 10-4 edge.
Williams and Jones then came through with an RBI triple and double respectively to put the Bulldogs one swing away from sending Reeltown home early.
That swing came on the next at-bat when Luker came through with a walk-off shot for his second homerun and third RBI on the day to end the game.
Williams led Sweet Water at the plate with a 4-4 performance and one RBI, followed by Luker, who was 2-3 with three RBI’s.
Jones was 2-4 with two RBI’s and Holt was 2-3 with one RBI. Antonio Landrum, Tucker and Anthony Landrum each added RBI’s while Scotty Nelson and Anderson provided crucial hits.
