Today, elementary school students all over the county get a rare opportunity when U.S. Rep. Artur Davis visits their schools.
Davis will be in town as part of his annual visits to Marengo County and plans visits to Westside Elementary School in Demopolis and Linden Elementary School.
The visit will begin at 11 a.m. when Davis plans to read to Westside students.
Principal Mary Glass said everyone is eager have Davis visit their campus.
“We are very excited,” Glass said. “Congressman Davis is the chairperson for Read Across America and we will have students from each class come to hear him read one or two Dr. Seuss books.”
Because of Davis’s packed schedule, Glass said, the visit is even more special.
“We are really excited to have him take time out of his busy schedule to come visit us,” Glass said. “The children are very excited and very impressed to have him coming. It’s very inspiring to have the chairperson for “Read Across America” come to our school.”
Davis’s visit continues with an 11:15 a.m. meet and greets reception with BOE members and school principals. Davis will then tour the Fabulous Fours and Reading enrichment programs before heading to Demopolis High School at 11:45. Davis will speak to the DHS Leadership Group at noon before stopping off at the Linden Board of Education at 12:30 p.m.
Linden Schools Superintendent Walter Davis said they plan to greet the congressman in grand fashion before heading to Linden Elementary School to take a look at the systems After School Enrichment program, which was achieved with a $250,000 grant, at 1:30 p.m.
“We are going to have a welcome ceremony and let him say a few words,” Davis said. “From there we will go to the elementary school and look at our after school program.”
The visit, Davis said, will give the Linden system a chance to show off some of their new additions.
“We were really glad to hear he was coming to visit,” Davis said. “We have a lot going on and we can’t wait to show him.”
