MMI wins big over WAP

MARION-The Marion Military Institute Tigers jumped on the West Alabama Pre Titans early and often to pace themselves to a 54-13 region win.

Defense got the Tigers on the board early as Michael Hardy recovered a Titan fumble in the end zone on the second play from scrimmage to put the Tigers up 6-0. Javar Smith hit the extra point to make the score 7-0.

The Tiger defense came up big again on the next play from scrimmage as Smith stepped in front of a Titan pass for a short run to the endzone. The PAT was again good giving the Tigers a 14-0 lead.

With 8:51 to go in the first quarter it was time for the Tiger offense to go to work. Matthew McWayne would carry the load for Marion as he found the end zone on a 14-yard touchdown run. The extra point was again good giving Marion a 21-0 lead.

Kendrick Moore added two more scores for the Tigers as he hit pay dirt on strikes of 3 and 58 yards to build a quick 34-0 lead.

Rowe Elmore added the Tigers final points of the first half on a 12-yard touchdown run.

Despite finding themselves with a large margin to overcome the Titans kept after the Tigers and the result was a big play near the end of the half. With only 1:10 remaining on the clock in the first half Mark Geiger hit Gene Samuels on a hook and ladder play which saw Greg Yelverton cut through the Tiger defense for a 53 yard score to put the titans on the board 41-6. The point after was good making the score 41-7.

The Tigers came out in the second half smoking again as Smith returned the opening kickoff 80 yards to open play.

However, the Titans were able to counter with a 2-yard quarterback sneak from Andrew Snipes. The point after would fail leaving the Titans down 48-7.

Marion capped the scoring with a Hardy 46 yard touchdown run to cap the scoring at 54-13.

Hardy led the Tigers with 129 yards on 11 carries. Yelverton paced the Titans with 86 yards on 12 carries.
