Just when the need was greatest, Gaineswood was awarded a grant Thursday for $10,000 by the Alabama Power Company Foundation to aid in restoration, upkeep and preservation of the historical site.
“In light of cut-backs from the state, it was a timely need,” said Mike Oakley, public relations representative for the Foundation.
Those cut-backs are in reference to a recent $1.4 million budget reduction for the State Historical Commission, said Matt Hartzell, historic site director for Gaineswood.
Oakley said the Friends of Gaineswood applied for the grant six months ago. The application was reviewed and the Foundation knew immediately that Gaineswood had legitimate uses for the funds.
John Northcutt, chairman of the Friends of Gaineswood, said his organization is greatly appreciative of the award.
The Foundation’s mission is to help communities capitalize on their own strengths. Hartzell said this grant will give Demopolis that opportunity.
