DEMOPOLIS-Residents of Marengo County will receive a rare opportunity starting Thursday as the Marengo County Historical Society will host a tag sale at their Washington Street headquarters down the street from the Demopolis Public Library.
Kirk Brooker, Director of the Marengo County Historical Society, said the first opportunity to buy would come to society members Thursday night from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
“There will be a presale Thursday night for Historical Society members only,” Brooker said. “But people can join the historical society if they want to. It will be $10 to get into the free sale for members and there will be wine and cheese and you can purchase items that night.”
Brooker said the following sales would be open to anyone.
“The next day it is open to the public and free,” Brooker said. “It will start Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. and will run until 5 p.m. and 8:20 a.m. until noon on Saturday.”
Brooker said. The items for sale are a combination of items collected by the society through the years and donated items.
“Everything in here is from the historical society,” Brooker said. “It was gathered from some of our properties and they are things we can’t use. There are also donations from people all around.”
Through the years the society has acquired some very interesting things. Brooker said when they began to put things in order for the sale they were amazed at some of the items that surfaced.
“We have a little bit of everything,” Brooker said. “There is antique furniture, pottery, baskets, primitive pieces and books. There are lots and lots of historic paper goods, such as magazines and fliers and memorabilia.”
Rembert Warren, a society member who was helping arrange some of their merchandise said they had everything from antique furniture to old Boy Scout manuals.
We have found things that date from the 1850’s to the 1980’s,” Warren said. “We have found all kinds of magazines from World War I, World War II old manuals and news articles about Demopolis.”
Other items for sale include china, glassware, advertising memorabilia, figurines, knick knacks, antique toys, architectural salvage, a first edition Sports Illustrated, an Empire chest old beds, railroad items and old tools.
A Victorian organ, oak bed linens and garden items are also included in the sale.
