DEMOPOLIS-The Demopolis Children’s Arts Center, which is located in the old Church Aflame building on North Walnut Street, will be holding registration this week for their fall and winter sessions. Mary and Doug Saunders, who purchased the building from Church Aflame, have been working diligently to have the building ready when sessions begin
Mary Saunders said when the center opens they hope to provide a fun, positive place for children to spend time.
“There are several different things that we are going to offer,” Saunders said. “There will be a visual arts department and in that department there will be painting, sculpting, drawing, jewelry making, arts and crafts and several other activities.”
Saunders said they would also offer classes from the Jordan School of Dance.
“We will also have a school of dance,” Saunders said. “That will be part of our performing arts department and they will teach ballet, tap and Tiger tumbling. That will be tumbling gymnastics.”
A music department will also open in January.
Saunders, who moved back to Demopolis from Jackson Hole, Wy. said she saw a need in the community for a program like this.
“We just felt like this would be a great thing for Demopolis,” Saunders said. “It is something new and something we felt everyone would enjoy.”
Though the center’s main focus is on children, Saunders said adults are also welcome.
“We say that we are going to have fun classes for boys and girls ages two to 99,” Saunders said. “That is because we have adult classes as well even though it is the children’s art center.”
The center is a positive place for children to go after school, and it will provide them with something to do when classes are on break.
“We also have a schools out program,” Saunders said. “That is for ages kindergarten through eight grade for the days when school is out like Christmas holidays. On those days we will have an all day program from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. where there will be all day art classes and a good, fun place for the kids to come.”
Registration will be held on Thursday from 1:30 until 6:30, Friday at the same times and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Registration for adult programs will be held at the same time.
