Easter services observed at local churches

The Easter holiday is a time of tradition for churches around the world. There are several historic symbols that provide a common ground for celebration among all Christian churches.
The cross is probably the most well known Easter symbol of all. The Cross is the symbol of the Crucifixion, as opposed to the Resurrection. However, at the Council of Nicaea, in A.D. 325, Constantine decreed that the Cross was the official symbol of Christianity. The Cross is not only a symbol of Easter, but it is more widely used, especially by the Catholic Church, as a year-round symbol of their faith.
Lent is also a well-known Easter tradition. Lent is the forty-six day period just prior to Easter Sunday. It begins on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras (French for “Fat Tuesday”) is a celebration, sometimes called “Carnival,” practiced around the world, on the Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday.
In the Black Belt, the traditional symbols and celebrations are complimented with each church’s own special celebrations.
The Linden United Methodist Church will celebrate their Easter Sunday with a very unique celebration. The church will hold a special bird release to climax its Easter morning at their 11 a.m. worship service. The bird release has been found to be a special spiritual and emotionally soaring experience for those who attend, especially for children, bird lovers and everyone who loves Easter.
For more information on the special bird release please contact the church at 295- 5061. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the Easter service from Rev. Jim Meadows. Linden First United Methodist church is located at 401 N. Main Street, Highway 43 in Linden.
First Presbyterian Church of Demopolis will also be taking their services outdoors. The church will hold their Easter sunrise service at 6 a.m. at Tom Boggs farm and regular services at 11 a.m. at the church itself at 300 N. Strawberry St. in Demopolis.
River of Life Church, located on highway 43 at the South Peach Tree Plaza in Demopolis is also inviting the public to their special Easter Service. River of Life is inviting everyone to come worship with The Young Adults Sunday School Class for a special Easter message. Sunday School will begin at 9:45 a.m. with worship service set for 10:45 a.m.
