UWA lose pair to Albany State

ALBANY, GA – Freshman Shannon Goggins picked up three hits on the afternoon, including a double and two RBI, but it would not be enough as the Tigers dropped a pair of games to Albany State (15-35) by the scores of 8-6 and 4-1 on Thursday.
Julie Burkett went 1-for-3 in game one with a home run and three RBI. Haley Brown added a triple, while teammate Jess Butrica went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Jessica Jacquay and Tamara Neal also added a pair of hits each for UWA.
Whitney Woodington (1-3) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on four hits in 1.1 innings of work. Junior Casey Cockrum pitched 4.2 innings in relief of Woodington and allowed two earned runs on four hits to go along with one strikeout.
Butrica and Jacquay picked up one hit apiece in game two, while teammate Katie Breneman added a hit and one run scored. Cockrum and Brown rounded out the UWA offense, each going 1-for-3.
Heather Shugart (1-4) took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits in five innings of work to go along with two strikeouts.
The Tigers move to 8-23 overall and return to action on Friday when they participate in day one action of the GSC Crossover Tournament in Decatur, Ala. West Alabama opens Friday play with a 4:00 p.m. game with Central Arkansas and will also face Henderson State in a 6:00 p.m. start.
